Talk with Lynn Povich
April 15th, Common Hour (1:50-3:15) in DAC 416C

Lynn Povich is an award-winning journalist who has spent more than 40 years in the news business. After graduating from Vassar, she began her career as a secretary in the Paris Bureau ofNewsweek magazine, rising to become a reporter and writer in New York. In 1970, she was one of 46 women who sued the magazine for sex discrimination, the first women in the media to sue. Five years later, she was appointed the first woman Senior Editor in Newsweek’s history. Lynn has written a book about that landmark lawsuit, its bittersweet impact on the women involved and what has--and hasn't changed. THE GOOD GIRLS REVOLT will be published September 10 by PublicAffairs.

Lynn became Editor-in-Chief of Working Woman magazine in 1991, and in 1996, she joined MSNBC.com as East Coast Managing Editor, overseeing the internet content of NBC News and MSNBC Cable programs and personalities. In 2005, she edited a book of columns by her father, famed Washington Post sports writer Shirley Povich, called ALL THOSE MORNING...AT THE POST.

A recipient of the Matrix Award for Magazines, Lynn serves on the Advisory Boards of the International Women's Media Foundation and the Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch. She is married to Stephen Shepard, who was Editor-in-Chief of Business Week magazine for 20 years and is now the Founding Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism of the City University of New York. They have two children.**

The Academic Lecture Series Invites You to

Gender, the Holocaust, and its Aftermath: Old Questions, New Research
Date: Thursday, March 7th, 2013
Time: 1:50 PM - 3:15 PM
Location: DAC Rm. 206, Queens Campus

Dr. Grossmann, a noted historian of Germany, German Jewry and gender, will provide new insights into the gender dimension of the Holocaust in this talk.  Reflecting on the Holocaust through the perspective of gender, does not, as many have worried, create a troubling hierarchy of victimization but rather deepens our understanding of experiences that are difficult to fathom. The lecture examines commonalities and differences  between female and male experience in a variety of circumstances, including early persecution, flight and emigration, life in the ghettos, the ordeals of concentration and labor camps, the perils of hiding, liberation, and the aftermath of the war.
